Attorney Peter Sharp defends a murder case when one of his marina dock neighbors (a suspended LAPD detective) is arrested and charged with shooting the producer of a courtroom drama motion picture on which Peter was working on as legal consultant.
Unfortunately for the accused, the police found one empty shell in his recently fired revolver, determined to be the murder weapon. His suspension was the result of excessive force complaints in the African American community, and the murder victim is a black man who the detective had been seen arguing with.
Peter’s not-too-friendly ex-wife is the district attorney prosecuting this case, and while conducting his investigation to find a possible other shooter, Peter uncovers a motion picture piracy gang and also encounters a white supremacy militia group.
While the clock is ticking toward the rapidly approaching trial date, Peter’s 12-year-old legal ward Suzi, an adorable little Chinese computer wizard, works feverishly trying to save the day with her digitized analysis of all the facts turned in by their investigators.
In what may turn out to be a grand case-saving finale, Suzi schemes to work her way into the courtroom on the last day of what has been a disastrous trial, to present her theory to the jury.
The last witness of the case turns out to be the biggest surprise of all, and everyone involved learns a very important lesson about crossing swords with the intelligence of this 12-year-old, including the trial judge.
Some of the other cases Peter Sharp is peripherally involved in while the murder investigation is going on involve a 500-pound woman whose dog is getting her into trouble for leaving souvenirs on the city’s streets, and a suicide-prone psychiatrist.
